Mad Max is back [sorta] and one wonders why it has taken 30 years!? Also I think Mel Gibson was certainly mad to turn down the lead role [that undoubtedly made him famous] stating his age as the reason. If all the other 1980s action stars are still doing it, then I see no problem. In fact in this kind of gritty drama his ‘old age’ would have been a positive boon.
I could see this franchise continuing if this movie is successful. It doesn’t sound like the participants of this story get to the city we saw at the end of the last instalment? So there is always room for growth.
The biggest issue for fans when already extant film series get a new star in the iconic lead role [not that, that is necessarily insurmountable, think James Bond or Batman for instance] is that it somehow feels like it lessens the product. No matter how much you don’t want to, you are always comparing. So the best way to approach this film, if you know the originals really well, is to try and completely forget they are based on previous incarnations of the characters at all. In fact one wonders why this could not be another road warrior in the same story world?
Still in this case it is perhaps fittingly a new actor for a new generation?
